The people of Delta State deserve clear answers about the reported ₦1.3 trillion in derivation funds that became the subject of an Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) investigation involving former governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

This is not merely a story about a former governor. It is a question about public money, the management of oil revenue, institutional accountability and the responsibility of government to explain how public resources are used.

What Is the ₦1.3 Trillion Allegation About?

According to reports published by Nigerian media in November 2024, the EFCC arrested Okowa over allegations concerning the management of approximately ₦1.3 trillion in 13 per cent derivation funds accruing to Delta State from the Federation Account between 2015 and 2023, during his eight-year tenure as governor.

Investigators were also reported to be examining separate allegations involving ₦40 billion connected to investments in a floating liquefied natural gas project and the acquisition of properties.

These are allegations under investigation, not proof of guilt. Okowa has denied wrongdoing and has maintained that he would cooperate with investigators.
